Minn. eye surgeon offers free surgeries to troops

Homes for Heroes found this great opportunity from a generous surgeon for troops in need of laser eye surgery.

From an article in the Pioneer Press:

A Minneapolis eye surgeon is offering military members free corrective laser surgery worth $5,000.

Dr. Neal Sher has already helped more than 250 military men and women improve their vision. He donates his services and the Phillips Eye Institute donates the space.

He says a lot of people pay lip service to doing something to help the troops, and he wanted to do something more substantial.

Vision is an issue because many troops aren’t allowed to wear contact lenses in the desert. They can wear glasses, but those can blow off, get dusty and fog up.

Sher’s charity has caught the attention of Gen. David Petraeus. The head of U.S. Central Command has acknowledged Sher’s work with a thank-you note.

Sher says he does the surgeries because his dad and other relatives are veterans

A son and grandson to U.S. Marine Soldiers, Eric was born in Washington, DC. Although he lived briefly on the West Coast and in Guatamala, he has spent nearly all of his 36 years in the DC metro area. He started his career in the finance industry, but has been practicing real estate full time for the past seven years. In addition, he has found success in real estate investment, renting and managing his condos. He is currently affiliated with Keller Williams Realty’s Old Town Alexandria office and serves as their DC broker & VA Associate Broker. He is also licensed in Maryland.

Eric lives inside the beltway, just outside of DC, with his wife and 3 year old son. He is fluent in English & Spanish.

Extending the First Time Home Buyers Credit For Military Families

Great News! The US House of Representatives’ overwhelming voted to extend the first time home buyers credit for an additional 12 months to anyone in the military who has served overseas for three months in 2009. In a vote of 416 to zero, the bill now has to go the US Senate and the President for final approval.

This extension could give up to 350,000 military families currently deployed overseas until November 2010 to take advantage of the current tax credit. In addition, the IRS “recapture” rules will be waived for any service member who is deployed and must sell or rent their home.

This seems to be one time that the US Congress, Senate and President should be able to agree. Extending the tax credit for our military is the right thing to do no matter what your political beliefs.
